Dark Field Microscopy

Light microscopy is an important tool that is used extensively in many areas of science. The most commonly used form is called ‘brightfield’ microscopy. A method which gives a more detailed view of the subject is called ‘darkfield’ microscopy.

This technique uses a special objective and an oil film between the lens and the slide to allow a more detailed microscopic view of the subject to be studied. This method is economical and allows images of blood cells (and other objects if so desired) to be viewed with a minimum of scientific equipment. By utilizing a microscope, a special video camera and computer, the images may be viewed on a screen and also printed.
